EA Removes Microtransactions From Battlefront II (For Now)

In another effort to calm the masses, EA has announced they have temporarily removed all microtransactions from their latest game Star Wars Battlefront II. The move stems from the recent backlash the company has received surrounding “pay-to-win” features implemented into the game.

Don’t have Star Wars Battlefront II yet?

EA released a statement regarding their decision to remove all microtransactions from the game, stating:

“We hear you loud and clear, so we’re turning off all in-game purchases. We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing and tuning. This means that the option to purchase crystals in the game is now offline, and all progression will be earned through gameplay. The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game.”

Fans have been criticizing the game on many levels. First, there was the issue of the ridiculously tedious amount of game time players needed to reach before unlocking hero and villain characters. Then there’s the option to purchase loot boxes, essentially giving those who spend more money a ledge up in advancing through the game. Multiplayer matches would be a nightmare for players who can’t afford to purchase loot boxes.

Unfortunately, it seems microtransactions will make a return to Battlefront II eventually, but only after the company has “made some changes to the game.” What’s important here is that fans and the online community were able to put enough pressure on a large video game company to make some changes. These changes might not be permanent, but at least it got EA to acknowledge their mistakes.

A Reddit thread first brought attention to these concerns, and EA’s response to it became the most downvoted Reddit comment in history.

It’s hard to say if EA will make any positive changes to Star Wars Battlefront II, and some fans think the company’s decision to remove microtransactions from the game is purely to save face. Or the company is truly making an effort to listen to their fans. Maybe more video game companies will learn from EA’s mistakes and understand who to take into consideration when making new games. The fans.

Do you think EA will start making more player-friendly changes? Are you still going to play Star Wars Battlefront II? Let us know in the comments below!
