Visceral Games, Studio Behind Dead Space Series, Gets the Axe From EA

The future of the Dead Space series seems bleak after EA announced they will be shutting down Visceral Games. The studio was currently working on a new game set in the Star Wars universe which EA describes as “a story-based, linear adventure game.”

Visceral Games is known for creating games such as the Dead Space series, Dante’s Inferno, Battlefield Hardline, as well as older games like 007: Agent Under Fire and The Godfather games. The original Dead Space was a hit, but unfortunately Dead Space 2 and 3 didn’t meet expectations in sales. Zach Wilson, a former level designer for Visceral Games, claimed Dead Space 2 cost $60 million to make and only sold 4 million copies.

Touching upon the Star Wars game Visceral was working on for over three years, Executive Vice President of EA Patrick Söderlund stated in a recent blog post: “Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.”

The project is now in the hands of EA Vancouver, and rumors of the game switching from a single-player title to something entirely different have sprung up because of Söderlund’s comments.

Are big budget single player games dying off? Is EA making a smart decision in closing Visceral Games? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
