Net neutrality and gamers

If you live in the US, chances are that you may have heard about the net neutrality debate. The FCC established the rules and the US Senate is now seeking to remove the regulations affecting our Internet Service Providers. They are even using words like “Restoring Internet freedom” to make you support it.

Problem is, that freedom is for corporations, not you.

How does this problem affect us gamers?

Well for one, they could throttle your connection. Throttling consists of slowing down considerably your connection speed after a certain threshold of data usage. Don’t watch too much Netflix or Twitch folks, ’cause you won’t be able to play online games pleasantly anymore!

Then, they could also arbitrarily block access to certain content, even if lawful. Peer-to-peer file sharing services would most likely be blocked and ISPs could block competing products to benefit theirs.

They could also establish “fast lanes” where certain content gets the better speed over others. They could benefit certain content over others. Yep, movies, where Bing is used over Google, could actually be accurate.

Thankfully, it seems that the opposition is still standing strong. Thanks to bribery being legal in the US (in the form of lobbyism), several senators are supporting the new bill.
