EA Expects 105 Million PS4 and Xbox One Consoles Sold and 40% of Game Sales to be Downloads by 2018

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen announced at the company’s earnings call that sales of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles are expected to reach 105 million by the end of 2017.

As things stand, Sony has shipped 60 million consoles and has probably sold a number not far off, as it had sold 53 million by the end of 2016. The Japanese company expects to sell 75 million by the end of this year, meaning, according to EA’s forecast, 30 million Xbox One consoles will be sold by the same time.

Jorgensen said that EA also expects game downloads to make up 40% of the market by the end of 2017. Game downloads have become increasingly more popular despite owners being able to trade in physical versions of games and them being cheaper. If EA’s estimates are anything to go by, the future looks bleak for game retailers.

The company doesn’t expect itself to reach the 40% digital downloads mark, mainly because players prefer physical copies of its games, which include the FIFA and Battlefield series’. The latter performed well with its last title, Battlefield 1, pushing EA’s digital sales up to 33%, higher than the forecasted 29%.

It will be interesting to see how many more years it takes for digital downloads and physical copies to split the market share half and half.
